The 2022 U.S. Open Invades Boston
Venue: The Country Club in Brookline, Mass
Date: June 16th – 19th
Purse: $17.5 million
The third major of the 2022 golf season rolls in The Country Club at Brookline with very little controversy… Just kidding! The 2022 U.S. Open will feature the best golfers in the world and will mark the first tournament that the world of golf will be together since the inaugural LIV Golf event.
Several golfers who competed in LIV Golf's first tournament are expected to be part of the 2022 U.S. Open field, including Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. While the PGA Tour has suspended all golfers for playing on the LIV tour, the USGA organizes the U.S. Open 2022 and will allow these players to participate. However, none should be in contention come Sunday evening.
For the first time since 1988, a national champion will be crowned in Brookline, Massachusetts, and some of the best golfers in the world look to build on their current momentum. The favorites heading into this week, as projected by Jazsports.ag/*, are Rory McIlroy, who is the +1100 favorite, followed by Justin Thomas at +1200, Scottie Scheffler at +1500, and Jon Rahm at +1500.
World No. 1 and Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler is looking to become just the sixth golfer to win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same season, while PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas is looking to be the seventh in history to capture titles at the PGA and U.S. Open consecutively. Thomas comes in playing his best golf of the season, and with his current scorching hot iron play and his putting, I expect him to be in contention come Sunday evening.
Speaking of iron play. Collin Morikawa has been lights out with his iron play this season, as he is in the top-five in strokes gained approaching the green, which is a key to winning at The Country Club in Brookline—currently listed at +2500, as projected by Jazzsports.ag/*, I think you will see Morikawa around the top of the leader board all week and is worth a look.
If you are playing the momentum card, then there's no golfer hotter than Rory Mcllroy right now. Mcllroy is on a mission, and if defending his title at the RBC Canadian Open last week was a message, I think his message will be even louder this week. Currently listed as the favorite at +1100, as projected by Jazzsports.ag/*, Mcllroy's game is a perfect fit at The Country Club.
Long but accurate off the tee and iron play will be a huge factor in who ends up the national champion and based on his play last week, there is no doubt Mcllroy will be in contention come Sunday evening. If Mcllroy gets his putting going, the only thing that failed him last week, then he will run away with the 2022 U.S. Open Championship.
